Twenty Exchange was completed in 1931 and was designed by the architectural firm of Cross & Cross in the restrained style once known as Modern Classic, a style which emerged as architects moved from the Art Deco era to the Modern period.

The building was built to be the Wall Street headquarters of the City Bank Farmers Trust Company, which would eventually become one of the world’s largest banking institutions, Citibank. The stone-clad icon was the fourth tallest building in the world at the time of completion and remains one of New York’s tallest buildings and  a prominent feature of the iconic lower Manhattan skyline. The steel-framed tower is sheathed in Mohegan Granite and Alabama Rookwood Limestone. Over 5,000 workers completed construction of Twenty Exchange in exactly one year. It is one of the era's most noteworthy skyscrapers.

Widely spaced giant piers rise to 14 freestanding heroic figures, said to represent the "Giants of Finance". Seven of the Giants are smiling, and seven frowning, meant to represent the ups and downs of the financial markets.

The main entrance is distinguished by its dramatic curved arch surrounded by 11 coins of carved granite that represent the many countries in which the institution had offices. Decorative doors of nickel silver, an unusual alloy of nickel which is white in color, trimmed with bronze and a variety of cast and carved forms, designed by the British sculptor David Evans, adorn the lower floors.

Its glorious banking halls and superb Art Deco details have largely remained intact after almost 90 years. Twenty Exchange Place is one of New York’s most distinguished landmarks and embodies the fabric of the city. The soaring towers' radiance has kept it a common fixture of television and film, featured in movies and tv shows such as Inside Man, The Joker, The Amazing Spiderman 2, Wall Street, Gotham, The Blacklist, and many others.
